Fighting for Students’ Rights

The MUN Students’ Union works hard to represent students’ interests and concerns, and organizes various campaigns and initiatives around topics of interest – particularly those relating to post-secondary education. MUNSU representatives meet with university administration on a regular basis and lobby for the continued improvement of our campus community. Campaigns to increase sustainability on campus, combat oppression, and break-down administrative and financial barriers to post-secondary education are major priorities for the Students’ Union and continue to be a focus for MUNSU’s educational and lobbying work.

Members of the MUN Students’ Union are united with all public post-secondary students in the province through the Canadian Federation of Students. As a result, students in Newfoundland and Labrador have made significant achievements in improving the accessibility of the province’s public post-secondary system. This year students were successful in once again securing the continuation of the tuition fee freeze through lobbying of the provincial government. Over the past few years students have also seen the elimination of interest on the provincial portion of student loans and commitments to replace the student loans program with an up-front, needs-based grants program.

However, there is still more work to be done and the MUN Students’ Union will continue to lobby for a more accessible system of public post-secondary education. Whether that means working with students and the administration to improve equity on our campuses and in our community, or lobbying provincial and federal governments to increase support for public post-secondary education, the Students’ Union will continue to advocate for the interests of Memorial undergraduate students.
